Type G seats are forward-facing car seats with an in-built harness for children up to 8 years old.* This type of seat has quickly become a popular category after its introduction in September 2014. These types of car seats have an in-built harness that enables a child to stay harnessed for up to 8 years of age* Due to problems with booster seats and families placing small children in them, a new classification, TYPE G, was introduced in the current AS/NZS 1754:2013.

As per the AS/NZS 1754:2013, the restraint is a forward-facing car seat from 6 months to approximately 8 years of age. Extended harnessing Type G Seats have a lower shoulder height marker label at 29cm (Minimum Entry Level) and a max shoulder height marker of 48 to51cm (Exit Level)

Even though the current standards class the entry-level seat from 6 months of age, your child must reach the minimum height marker of 29cm to legally be able to sit in this seat forward-facing. From our experience, this rarely happens before 12 months of age, and in some cases, we have had 15-16-month olds who still have not reached the minimum height marker. As with all forward-facing child restraints, you should not turn your child from rear-facing to forward-facing until they are of the correct height to turn around.

The G type car seat is a safer alternative to any type of booster seat; as your child will be using the internal harness from minimum entry label hight to approx. 8 years of age. With the type G car seat, you do not need to worry about your child being too short for a booster seat. One of the biggest problems with booster seats is that parents move their children into the booster seat too early. A consequence of moving a child into a booster too early is the sash part of the seat belt; it may come into close contact with the neck and, in the case of an accident, cause serious injury.
